Solomon Rollins ENG 8 - Final Exam

The American Dream Final

Millions of people ask themselves every single day whether the American Dream is a reality or an illusion. Some say that its reality. Some say it’s an illusion. And some say its both, depending on who you are or your determination. I believe its both. It just depends on your determination.
It’s portrayed in The Great Gatsby. Gatsby himself became an achiever of the American Dream through determination to succeed in life. He had started at a young age. Making a list of what is important and how to succeed. Than as he went on in life, even in his lowest stage in life he was still determined to succeed. No matter what he had to do to become a success. He even shared his wealth with others by throwing parties (even if it was to get Daisy to come to one).
Than there’s those who don’t have the determination. Whether it be because someone convinced them that they would never be successful, no matter what they did (this comes in case of our school, so many kids are told they’ll never amount to nothing and then listen to it), or whether they’re just to lazy to even try. Another example would be Myrtle Wilson. The woman never tried. She basically slacked off and pretended to be successful with her fancy clothes and the fancy parties. Than there’s also Jordan and Daisy; who’s success was just handed to them. These three women really didn’t try and trampled those who ever stood against them. (Even if it was the ones they loved.)
Finally there are those where it’s in between for them. You have those that at one time try and succeed but then get to a point and give up and just lay back and become comfortable with mediocre life. Like Nick Carraway. He just goes through life striving for better life, yet still goes from job to job not really caring where they go or what they do. He just has his little house surrounded by all the mansions with all his friends that will take care of him. His little job where, he’s not important but just does enough to satisfy his boss. He just snuffs off the success; to comfortable with his way of life that he’s lost his drive and determination to succeed.
So, yeah it is both a reality and an illusion. It just all comes down to haw much you want it. How comfortable you are with just mediocre or how lazy you are. But the American Dream is reality to those who try and an illusion to those who don’t or a little of both to those who get to a certain point and than just give up on it.
