In the Great Gatsby, the American Dream is a main theme in the story. It shows how people change after they make money and how their relationships with other people change. But the American Dream isn’t what everyone expects it to be.
Jay Gatsby was a poor boy before the war and until he met Wolfsheim. He was James Gatz and changed his name as soon as he got rich. That’s one way how someone changes after getting rich. He also changed his lifestyle by having a mansion with a large area of land and throws parties almost every weekend.
Gatsby throws large parties. One reason I think he throws large parties but not mentioned in the book was to have some popularity and the other reason in being to hopefully someday to meet Daisy again at one of his parties. Daisy was his girlfriend before he went to war and he wanted to be with her again.
In the American Dream, big parts of it is settling down and live in a nice home with a perfect American family. Gatsby finally gets Daisy’s attention at one of the parties he threw and wanted to be with her again. Daisy is married to Tom Buchanan and he is heart broken. The American Dream is about trying to get rich and succeed in life from failures and attempts. A good social life is one part and having a perfect American family is another. There were some failed attempts Gatsby had. His last dream was to be with Daisy again but she was married to someone else. That must have been a huge failure for him. That’s why the Great Gatsby is a good example of the American Dream.
